Reel Short Editing
I was a full time editor for Reel Short for a little over a year and a half. In that time, I edited countless shows. The format was 1.5 minutes per episode, often assigned around 20 episodes per show. These had to be brought to a fully polished edit with SFX and music over the course of about a week. While I can't put the episodes I edited here, I have included links to 3 of the shows I am most proud of. They didn't always let me cook, but sometimes I took liberties that worked and presented them with ideas they might not have initially considered. As an editor, that's one of the best feelings
Private School Playboys
Private School Playboys - Of all the shows I edited at Reel Short, I am most happy with this one. Despite ReelShort shows being inherently funny due to their soap operatic nature, this is the only show that was a downright comedy. I had not edited a straightforward comedy for ReelShort yet, so felt a true calling to get expresive with the editing. funny cuts and intersting sound effects. For example, I put an eagle's cry underneath a snarky look being given by our cocky American protagonist. The producer of the show actually messaged me themselves to tell me how hard he laughed. So that was a proud moment in my Reel Short career.
However fun they were to edit, my batch of 20 episodes were also very complicated. Every scene contained a lot of action, characters with speaking lines, and elaborate set pieces. Plus, it had to be funny. So, a high degree of difficulty, but a very engaging edit.
My Sister Is The Warlord Queen
My Sister The Warlord Queen - One of the most popular shows I edited, I was assigned with the final 20 episodes, which was essentially one long conversation between our heroes and villains. So the challenge for me was to differentiate each episode from the next, so it wouldn't feel like a slog. The coverage usually gives you enough to play with if you know how to use cutting to create new moments that aren't in the script.
The Summer My Heart Stopped
The Summer My Heart Stopped - Once again I was tasked with the final 25 episods of the show. This story was a bit different than other Reel Short shows. It was very psychological and was about a character losing his mind and hallucinating the presence of a long lost love. I got very experimental with my choices to portray his mental state, using jump cuts and match cuts, really trying to add layers to his POV. Because this is something of a downer story, I needed downer music. But I didn't want to use music that was overtly "sad." Instead, I attempted to find melancholy in more rhythmically pleasing sounds like spanish guitar.
The Adjuster
The Adjuster - Based on real life events, The Adjuster was the closest I came to editing a straight forward thriller at Reel Short. Cuts, music and general flow had to carry that paranoid anxiety felt by the protagonist.
