Production Design

"Steve Brosky" was a micro-budget film shot in Allentown PA. It is set during the late 1960's, early 70's. A period piece like that on such a small budget forces creativity and efficiency. There was a clump of scenes in the script that read like a single sequence - main character Steve's decent into drug addiction - so I thought it best to find or build 1 space that we could repurpose 4 different ways for the 4 different sets.

Due to the budget, the mock ups were mainly to establish an overall "vibe" and act as a reference for whatever props or set dressing we were able to find. Fred's apartment is where Steve first does hard drugs but it's also a place of comfort, acting as a new home for him at this point in the story. I wanted it to feel a little dank to a mature adult, but like the coolest place to hang during your early 20's in 1970

For my animated review of Barbarian, which you can find on the Animation page of my website, I built a tunnel set like the one featured in the film. I wanted a character to run down it. Moving a camera AND character together is tricky. So I decided to animate the character running in place and move the entire background frame by frame behind him. I mounted the tunnel set on a rig that I could slide back and forth using a numbered dial. Every frame of animation I slid the tunnel 1 click.
